Meet Martina from Blue Petal

Blue Petal was born from a moment of deep connection for its founder Martina after a visit to a small herbal farm. What started as a personal journey soon grew into a new way to care for her health. These days, Blue Petal offers handcrafted teas, infused honeys, and herbal tonics designed to nourish the body and calm the mind that use homegrown herbs alongside science. Read on to find out more about Martina's story.

TGFC/ How did you get started?

Martina/ Blue Petal began with a moment of deep resonance. While on holiday with my husband, we visited a herbal farm —and something about that place and the conversation with the owner, who offered herbal apprenticeships, stirred something in me. It awakened a quiet but powerful desire to support the health of myself and my family through the healing power of herbs.

That first year of learning was transformative. It quickly became clear that I wasn’t alone in this need—so many others were seeking gentle, plant-based ways to care for their well-being. And that’s how the seed of Blue Petal was planted.

From there, the journey continued—learning, growing, experimenting. Blue Petal became a heartfelt response to a wider call for people to reconnect with nature and rediscover the quiet strength of traditional herbal knowledge. With a foundation in both tradition and science, I began crafting small-batch herbal infusions in vinegars, honey, and teas—right from the kitchen bench and garden beds—always guided by the rhythm of the seasons and the senses.

What started as remedies for family and friends slowly blossomed into something more. Today, Blue Petal continues to offer handcrafted herbal goods with simplicity, trust, and care—created to nourish, comfort, and delight.

TGFC/ What makes Blue Petal special?
Martina/ Blue Petal products are crafted with deep intention—grown, gathered, and made by hand in small batches using herbs rooted in both traditional knowledge and modern science. What sets them apart is the care that goes into every step: from the soil and seasons to the jar and spoon.

We grow many of our own herbs or source them locally, always with a focus on freshness, sustainability, and potency. Our infusions—whether in honey, vinegar, as a herbal tea or seasoning—are thoughtfully formulated to support the body gently and effectively, with ingredients you can trust and taste.

Each product is designed not just for wellness, but to bring a moment of sensory delight: the soothing notes of calendula, scent of thyme, the golden glow of turmeric or the warmth of ginger. Blue Petal is about herbal nourishment that feels good, tastes good, and does good—for people and for the planet.

TGFC/ Do you have a favourite creation?

Martina/My personal favourite is our Blackcurrant Infused Honey. It’s rich, tangy, and deeply comforting—especially by the spoonful on cool mornings or stirred into a smoothie or a morning porridge. Blackcurrants are naturally high in antioxidants and vitamin C, offering gentle support for immune health and detoxification.

There’s something nostalgic and nourishing about this honey. It reminds me that herbal wellness doesn’t always have to be bold—sometimes it’s about quiet, joyful moments of care that support the body gently and consistently.

TGFC/What is your most popular product?

Martina/Our most popular product is the Turmeric-Ginger Oxymel. It’s a bold, golden blend of fresh turmeric and ginger infused in raw apple cider vinegar and sweetened with our honey. Customers love it as a daily tonic—for digestion, immunity, aches and pains and general vitality. It’s especially popular in the colder months, but many enjoy it year-round for its zesty flavour and gentle herbal support.

It’s a beautiful example of how traditional remedies can become modern favourites—functional, flavourful, and full of purpose.

TGFC/Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Martina/ We haven't won any awards yet—but we’re proud of the recognition we’ve gained through our community connections and collaborations. Blue Petal has been part of initiatives like Taste and Tales, The Sustainable Backyard Trail, and local seasonal workshops that bring people closer to the world of herbs in practical, sensory-rich ways.

We’re also active on Access Radio Taranaki through our Herbal Wisdom series, helping to spread awareness and education about herbal wellness. These experiences have laid the groundwork for future award recognition, and we’re slowly working toward opportunities in artisan food, sustainability, and natural wellness categories.
